Back in October, I shared the exciting news that I passed the Program Management Professional (PgMP) exam with PMI. This certification felt like the natural next step in my career journey, given my extensive experience in running programs and driving strategic roadmaps. As an independent strategic program consultant, earning this exclusive credential not only reinforces my expertise but also demonstrates my commitment to delivering real value for my clients.
The process of earning the PgMP certification was humbling, challenging, and rewarding. The application itself is rigorous, requiring detailed documentation of your experience and achievements, followed by a panel review before you can even schedule the exam.

When I began studying, I faced an unexpected hurdle: overconfidence. I thought I had mastered the content from my years of practical experience, which led me to procrastinate for nearly a year. When I finally buckled down, I realized this exam would require a level of focus and discipline I hadn't fully prepared for. It took me two attempts to pass, but the lessons I learned along the way were invaluable—not just for the PgMP but for any professional development journey.
Adapting My Study Approach
Unlike the PMP and PMI-ACP exams, for which I self-studied, the PgMP required a different approach. Here’s how I adjusted:
Using the Standard for Program Management: This was my primary study aid. PMI members have access to a PDF copy, and I highly recommend leveraging it. I took this a step further by converting the PDF into an audio format using an AI voice app, which allowed me to "study" during my commutes. This turned an otherwise unproductive hour into valuable preparation time.
Leveraging AI Tools: I used AI tools like ChatGPT to query specific sections of the standard while completing mock exams. This approach helped me connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, reinforcing my understanding.
Enrolling in a Boot Camp: When I realized I wasn't making progress on my own, I decided to invest in a three-day boot camp. While it wasn’t cheap, it was a game changer. The structured sessions helped me focus and engage with the material in ways I hadn’t before.
Practicing with Mock Exams: Mock exams were my go-to tool, just as they had been for the PMP and PMI-ACP. Finding a good PgMP simulator was a challenge, but once I did, it became invaluable. It helped me pinpoint weak areas and focus my efforts where they were needed most.
Learning from Mistakes
One of the biggest lessons I learned was the danger of overconfidence. I often found myself skimming sections of the standard, thinking, "Oh, I already know this." This approach backfired. My first attempt at the exam was a wake-up call. Fortunately, PMI’s performance reports provided detailed feedback, which helped me create a focused study plan for my second attempt.
During my second attempt, I took a more disciplined approach to time management. Instead of rushing through the exam and submitting early, I used every minute available to review my work. I revisited sections where I knew anxiety might have impacted my performance and caught several errors I was able to correct.
Key Takeaways
Preparation is about more than just studying materials. It’s about engaging with the content, leveraging available tools, and maintaining the discipline to stay focused.
Mock exams are invaluable. They not only prepare you for the format but also help identify areas that need improvement.
Use the full time during the exam. Reviewing your work thoughtfully can make a significant difference in catching preventable mistakes.
Looking Ahead
Earning the PgMP has been a humbling yet rewarding experience. It has not only validated my skills but also opened doors to better serve my clients as a strategic program consultant. For those of you on this journey, keep going—you’re closer than you think. For those just starting, embrace the challenge and remember that growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
